Neonectria radicicola is a phytopathogenic mold from the genus Neonectria . Neonectria radicicola is a teleomorph , the corresponding anamorph is Cylindrocarpon destructans ( Zinssm. ) Scholten .

description

The mycelium grows within the host plant or in the soil very close to the roots of the plants; it is almost black. When supernatural perithecia form, they are bright reddish. The spore carrier is branched.

Spurs

As with yeast , asexual spores are also developed by budding . Neonectria radicicola forms three different types of spores .

The meiospores are cylindrical and angled and are between seven and 50 micrometers long. They are thick-walled, brown with a flattened side wall. Mature meiospores have three septa . In the mycelium growing out of the meiospores, numerous round chlamydospores that measure between ten and 17 micrometers form quickly .

The mitospores ( conidia ) are smaller, they are between two and nine micrometers long, and elliptical, they sit in dense clusters on the phialides .

ecology

The fungus grows over the roots, into the shoot axes and the bases of the leaf and flower stalks of the host plants. The plant often breaks off directly above the ground, and leaves often fall off. Until then, the leaves often hang limply, and black necrotic spots form on the stems and roots and develop into deep cracks. The host plants often form a ring of phellogen around the infected areas.

More rarely, the fungus also attacks the eggs of roundworms (Nematoda).

Systematics

Neonectria radicicola forms a clade together with Neonectria neomacrospora and Neonectria galligena , the two closest relatives of the species:
