features

Cyprinella alvarezdelvillari reaches a maximum standard length of 43.8 mm. Standard lengths of less than 36 mm are usually achieved, with the males being 25 mm shorter than the females. The eye diameter is larger than the length of the snout. During the breeding season, males are covered with warts ( spawning rash ) on most of the body and on the fins , especially on the chin, in the middle of the back of the pectoral fin and on the uppermost row of scales of the caudal peduncle. There are small spines on the lips. The mouth is sloping. The ploughshare leg is short. The body, including the abdomen, is dark and has large, sparse pigment cells that are particularly prominent in adult males. The underside of the sexually mature males is reddish bronze. The cheeks and the area of the gill cover are brighter. The anal and paired fins have white borders. There is a dark transverse band on the midsection of the females that is as wide as the eye or wider.

distribution

Cyprinella alvarezdelvillari occurs in the Ojo La Concha and its mouth and 8 km downstream in the headwaters of the Arroyo del Pehón de Covadonga in the catchment area of the Río Nazas in the Mexican state of Durango .

habitat

Cyprinella alvarezdelvillari lives in open, flowing streams. In general, the species avoids beds with aquatic plants, ponds, and muddy grounds. Often, larger concentrations can be observed below low waterfalls, where the bottom consists of gravel and debris. The predominant aquatic plant genera in the habitat of Cyprinella alvarezdelvillari are Polygonum , Bacopa , Eleocharis and Najas . There are also numerous algae in the waters.

Way of life

Little is known about his way of life. Its habitat is fed by hot water springs, where temperatures of 32 ° C and more prevail. The species is most commonly seen in waters warmer than 29 ° C, while it does not occur in waters colder than 25 ° C.

status

Due to its small distribution area, Cyprinella alvarezdelvillari is listed by the IUCN in the " critically endangered " category.
