Cyrille Delannoit (born March 13, 1926 in Geraardsbergen , Belgium, † February 11, 1998 ) was a Belgian boxer . He was European champion among professional boxers in the middleweight division.
Career
Cyrille Delannoit, one of three boxing brothers, became a professional boxer in 1945 after a short amateur period. He fought his first fight on February 10, 1945 in Brussels and won against his compatriot de Wilde by being disqualified in the second round. By March 26, 1946, he played a total of 27 fights in Belgian wrestling almost exclusively against Belgian boxers, of which he won 21 fights. On the above date he fought in Antwerp against Kid Marcel, one of the best French middleweights, and defeated him on points. His next opponent was also a French on April 11, 1946 in Antwerp. Robert Villemain , who was already among Europe's top middleweight division, turned out to be too strong an opponent for Cyrille Delannoit, who lost this fight on points after ten rounds.
Cyrille Delannoit denied his next fights a weight class lower, in welterweight. He qualified thereby by victories over Jan Nicolaas, Gaspard Deridder and Nol Klein for a fight for the Belgian championship in welterweight against Willy Wimms . This fight took place on August 4, 1946 in Gent and Wimms won it by knockout in the 11th round.
Cyrille Delannoit, who was a technically gifted and fast boxer, did not let this defeat stop him. Due to his courageous fighting style, he was soon nicknamed "Tarzan". He won the next 12 fights in a row and scored a remarkable draw on March 15, 1947 in Brussels against the Dutch champion Luc van Dam . Through victories over the French top boxer Laurent Dauthuille on January 24, 1948 in Antwerp and Antoine Toniolo on March 20, 1948 in Kortrijk, Cyrille Delannoit acquired the right to challenge the European middleweight champion Marcel Cerdan . On May 23, 1948 he created the sensation in front of 35,000 spectators in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels and defeated Cerdan on points. He was the new European middleweight champion.
In the rematch on July 10, 1948 at the Palais des Sports in Brussels, Cerdan won the title back by winning points after 15, only to resign it shortly afterwards because he went to the United States to compete for the World Cup against Jake LaMotta to box. Cyrille Delannoit got the opportunity to box for the European Middleweight Championship for the second time on November 6, 1948 in Brussels. He took advantage of this chance and defeated Luc van Dam after 15 rounds on points.
After winning points over the strong Frenchman Mickey Laurant in Liege on February 27, 1949, Cyrille Delannoit defended his European Championship title on May 7, 1949 in Brussels against the young aspiring Italian Tiberio Mitri . Mitri clearly dominated this fight, knocking Delannoit to the ground four times. After 15 laps he therefore received the points win he deserved. On June 20, 1949 Cyrille Delannoit fought in Birmingham against Randy Turpin and lost by technical knockout in the 8th round. Turpin was at this point still at the beginning of his great career, which culminated with winning the world title in middleweight division.
After some notable victories by Cyrille Delannoit in 1949 and 1950, he defeated u. a. the French Gilbert Stock and again Mickey Laurant and a tie against the British middleweight champion Albert Finch , he fought on July 1, 1951 in the Turin Palazzo dello Sport against the world middleweight champion Sugar Ray Robinson . This fight wasn't about the world championship, but it was still very important for the career of Cyrille Delannoit. Sugar Ray Robinson turned out to be too good, however, he sent Delannoit three times within the first three rounds, which led to the abandonment of Delannoit.
After another defeat on October 10, 1951 in Brussels against the French Kid Marcel , Cyrille Delannoit, only 25 years old, resigned. On December 22, 1955 he tried a comeback in Antwerp against his compatriot Harry Mino. But when he lost this fight on points after ten rounds, he never entered a ring again.
