Cyrillus of Trier

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cyrillus of Trier was Bishop of Trier from the beginning of the second half of the 5th century .

Life

Eugen Ewig deduces from the Greek name of the bishop that there was a Greek-Oriental colony that remained in Trier. From this Cyrillus and his successor Iamblichus arose . Others assume that the bishops came from the Rhone region.

Cyrillus became bishop of Trier around 446/47. The destruction of Trier by the Huns in 451 probably also fell in his time. Also the unrest in Gaul after the murder of Emperor Valentinian III. 455 fall during this time.

It is said that Cyrillus had an inscription added for the founding bishops Eucharius and Valerius . Text comparisons show that there were relationships after Reims . The inscription was related to the restoration of a chapel in honor of the two founders. Later he had a new oratory built. He had the founders' bones transferred there. The construction time of the church was between 446/47 and 475/76. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Matthias later emerged from this. He was buried there too. The exact location of the grave is not known.
