Friedrich Prince

Friedrich Prinz (born November 17, 1928 in Tetschen , Czechoslovakia , † September 27, 2003 in Deisenhofen near Munich ) was a German historian .

Friedrich Prinz studied history, German and philosophy in Bonn and received his doctorate in 1955. His teachers in Bonn were Günther Müller and Franz Steinbach . In 1964 he received his habilitation in Munich with a thesis on early monasticism in the Franconian Empire . His teacher and expert in Munich was Karl Bosl . From 1965 to 1976 he taught general and comparative regional history at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken, and from 1976 to 1995 he worked as a professor of medieval history and comparative regional history at the Institute for Bavarian History at the University of Munich .

Prinz had been a full member of the humanities class at the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts since 1979 . From 1976 to 1994 was co-editor of the journal for East Central Europe research .

His main areas of work were the history of the Bohemian countries, the history of Bavaria and the early Middle Ages , whereby he dealt intensively with the transition from late antiquity to the Middle Ages . In addition to numerous articles, Prinz published many, in some cases extensive, comprehensive presentations and monographs on these research areas, many of which are considered standard works. Until his death he worked on the first volume of the 10th edition of "Gebhardt" ( Handbook of German History ), which was finally completed by Alfred Haverkamp .
