Walter Ziegler (historian)

Walter Ziegler (born July 16, 1937 in Reichenberg , Czechoslovakia ) is a German historian .

Life

Walter Ziegler has lived in Bavaria since 1946 . He attended high school in Munich . After graduating from high school , he studied for teaching in Freising and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . He passed the first state examination in 1964, the second in 1966. After completing his doctorate and habilitation under Andreas Kraus with his work on studies on the state budget of Bavaria in the second half of the 15th century at the University of Regensburg , he received a professorship for modern history and regional history in 1980 as well as didactics of history at the University of Würzburg . From 1989 until his retirement in 2002, Ziegler taught as the successor to Andreas Kraus at the Institute for Bavarian History at the University of Munich Bavarian State History with special emphasis on modern times. Ziegler has been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Swabian Research Foundation since 1994 . In 2001 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit .

The focus of his scientific work is the regional history, especially of Bavaria and southern Germany, in the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Another focus of his research are the Reformation and Counter-Reformation. In addition, he published several works on the contemporary history of Bavaria in the 20th century, especially on the time of National Socialism and the expulsion.
