The Czernowitzer Morgenblatt was a German-language daily newspaper from the city of Chernivtsi, which is located in the Ukraine today . The newspaper was founded in 1918 and appeared until 1940, at a time when the former to Austria-Hungary belonging Bukovina part of Romania was.
The newspaper was one of several large, German-language newspapers and was accordingly aimed at the German-speaking population of Czernowitz and the surrounding area, besides Germans, these were mainly Jews. The Morgenblatt was not only distributed in Chernivtsi, but throughout Bukovina and in other parts of Romania. The circulation was around 6,800 copies, and in the 1930s there was also an evening edition of the newspaper, the “evening paper of the Czernowitzer Morgenblatt”.
The Czernowitzer Morgenblatt was founded in May 1918 by Elias Eliahu Weinstein and Julius Weber . In addition to Alfred Margul-Sperber , Rose Ausländer and Mayer Ebner also wrote for the paper at times. Because of a sometimes very critical reporting on the Romanian state and its Romanization policy, the newspaper was on the verge of a permanent ban several times. From 1938 the newspaper was forced to introduce a Romanian-language section. During the Second World War, Chernivtsi was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940 . On June 28, 1940, the publication of the Czernowitzer Morgenblatt finally ended. Large parts of the former editorial staff, consisting mainly of Jews, were killed in the Holocaust . The founder Julius Weber died in a camp in Brazlaw in 1942 , Elias Eliahu Weinstein died in 1967 in Frankfurt am Main .
