Dániel Benkő

Dániel Benkő (born July 29, 1947 in Budapest ; † December 15, 2019 ) was a Hungarian lutenist and guitarist who also worked as a university teacher.

Life

From 1965 to 1969 Benkő received lessons at the Béla Bartók Music School in Budapest. In 1969 he was accepted into the guitar department of the Franz Liszt Music Academy , from which he graduated in 1971 with László Szendrey-Karper. Between 1971 and 1973 he attended lute master classes with Diana Poulton in Cheltenham and Eugen Müller-Dombois in Breukelen .

In 1971 he founded the Bakfark Consort , named after the Hungarian lutenist Bálint Bakfark , which was mainly devoted to Renaissance and Baroque music . With this ensemble he performed worldwide. He worked as a guitar teacher until 1976 and was then appointed professor of the lute at the Franz Liszt Music Academy. In addition, he led the international lute courses in Grožnjan, Croatia . In 1983 the Bakfark Consort was renamed Benkő Consort .

Benkő took part in numerous record productions, most of which were published by Hungaroton . Through his work, the works of the lutenist Bálint Bakfark became known to a wider public.

Appreciation

In 1998 he was awarded the Hungarian Order of Merit for his services to the promotion of Hungarian culture .
