The dune red fescue ( Festuca arenaria ) is a sweet grass (Poaceae) and belongs to the red fescue group ( Festuca rubra agg.). Two subspecies are currently mentioned in the literature : Festuca arenaria subsp. arenaria and Festuca arenaria subsp. oraria .
description
The dune red fescue is a perennial hemicryptophyte . It forms long runners and therefore grows freely grassy. It reaches heights between 10 and 70 centimeters. The mostly seven ribs of the leaf tops are densely hairy downy. Bundles of sclerenchyma are found on the upper side of the leaf on all ribs, on the lower side only in islands. The spikelets are up to 10 millimeters long. The upper glumes reach up to 6.8 millimeters in length. The three- veined , softly hairy lemmas are 6 to 9.7 millimeters long and are sharply pointed.
distribution
The grass grows in beach grass dunes ( white dunes ) and coastal sand schiller grass lawns .
