The Dürer-Haus (house address Döppersberg 19 ) is a listed former school building in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal . It is located on the eastern side of the Wuppertal main station on the Döppersberg street .

description

The building was erected between 1857 and 1860 in the architectural style of classicism with elements of neo-renaissance . The front is accentuated by a broad medium risk . Two wings of the building are connected to the rear and encompass a U-shaped courtyard, in the middle of which the risalit of the main staircase protrudes.

The school building, which was called the "Dürerschule" and was used as a secondary school for girls from around 1900, remained essentially unchanged until the Second World War, with the exception of the stairwell on the side. Only the reconstruction after heavy bomb damage brought the addition of a storey with a hipped roof, the addition of the main staircase, the inclusion of a ceiling in the auditorium and the change of window shapes in the central projection. It is not known whether the flight of steps to the main entrance was omitted in the course of this work. Otherwise, however, the facade design and the internal structure have been preserved.

history

The Dürer's house in the 19th century

The building was built from 1857 as a trade school ("Gewerbliche Lehr-Anstalten") for the city of Elberfeld. On September 28, 1876, the grammar school moved from Grünstraße to the Dürer House, which was expanded and converted for this purpose, and used it until January 7, 1893. From around 1900, it was called the "Dürer School" and served as a secondary school for girls .

On November 6, 1990, it was included in the list of architectural monuments in Wuppertal as a "representative school building of the Neo-Renaissance" and "testimony to the urban development of the city" .

Todays use

In addition to lawyers, architects and other tenants, the research institute " Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment, Energy " has had its business premises here since 1991. The building was acquired at the end of 2015 by the "Immobilienentwicklungsgesellschaft Sustainable Wuppertal mbH & Co. KG".
