history

Forest history

From the former hunting lodge Hohe Sonne you can walk in the direction of Ruhla , after about 800 m the forest on the Rennsteig belonging to the Dürrenberg. The mountain, known as "Dörrerenbergk" in 1692, "Dörnberg" in 1707 and "Dürrenberg" from 1754, was still provided with meadows and high pastures on the flat plateau at that time. On the flank of the mountain one encounters a "Schäfersborn" and several sunken roads as Evidence of the old traffic routes. The Helle is mentioned as early as 1522, which later became the "Mosbach Hell". In this tiny gorge, the Mosbach farmers hid their cattle and families during the war, and the entrance to the gorge was easy to block and camouflage. In the Mosbach church chronicle, the place is also noted as "ox stables". An adjacent forest village is called "Hoher Bruch", the name should indicate a wind or snow break. Most recently, hurricane Kyrill left severe damage in the forest on the hillside to the east.

Tunnel project

As part of a citizens' initiative, citizens of Mosbach have spoken out against a planned tunneling under the Dürrenberg and are fighting against the relocation of the previous federal road 19 in the Etterwind - Wilhelmsthal - Eisenach section to the federal road 19N, which is still in the route finding stage. The relocated federal highway 19 with tunneling through from Dürrenberg would, in the opinion of the planners, provide considerable relief for Eisenach's inner-city traffic and calm down the southern district, which is characterized by tourism. The new route would open into a tunnel near Wilhelmsthal Castle, which would cross under the Rennsteig at this favorable point and would end north of Mosbach at the Waldbad. As a continuation, a valley bridge would be built to the Kohlberg near Mosbach, where the main road would then connect to the "Eisenacher Stadtautobahn" with its destination at the Wutha roundabout. This section also needs a viaduct to cross the road over the Hörsel river , Gothaer Straße east of Eisenach and the electrified intercity railway line in the Eisenach – Gotha section .
