D'Gary (2007)

D'Gary ( Ernest Randrianasolo , born October 22, 1961 in Antananarivo ) is a Malagasy guitarist.

The son of a policeman from the Bara ethnic group played an older brother's guitar as a child. He came with his father to Tulear in 1969 and later to Betroka , where he experienced the hardship of the Bara pastoral people caused by soil erosion and cattle-thieving and, after his father's death in 1978, had to contribute to the family's maintenance as a guitarist at weddings and funerals.

In 1979 he returned to Antananarivo with a music group from Betroka, where he worked as an accompanist for the next few years. 1986-87, the studio owner Dida enabled him to develop his own style in his studio. On the occasion of one of the radio producer (and later minister of culture) Tsilavina organized AIDS exhibition was created for the label Discomad his first cassette Alatsao Balansy , from the 1992 five tracks under the name Garry on the album Musiques de Madagascar appeared.

In 1991 D'Gary met the American musicians Henry Kaiser and David Lindley through the Malagasy music star Dama Mahaleo . They recorded one of his tracks on A World Out of Time , and Kaiser released his Malagasy Guitar Music From Madagascar album .

In 1993 D'Gary performed alongside his colleagues Dama and Rossy at the Festival Internationale in Lafayette / Louisiana. With Dama and two musicians from Rossy's band he recorded the studio album A Long Way Home there. In 1994 he appeared as a member of the Malagasy Allstars in the House of Cultures in Berlin. Other albums were made with his band Jihé . More recently, he has also worked with Indian tabla player Nantha Kumar .
