Betroka ( big belly , which alludes to a no longer existing baobab specimen) is a community ( commune ) in the Anosy region in the south of Madagascar . According to the regional administration, it had around 68,000 inhabitants in 2010. It administers an area of 168 km² and is the center of a district of the same name .
Around 1890 Betroka was a settlement in which between 150 and 200 members of the Bara lived. In 1900 a military post was established and a short-lived administrative unit called the Bara District was established . As a result, only two settlers came to the region who mainly dealt with cattle breeding. Today Betroka is one of the largest towns along the National Route 13 between Ihosy and Tolagnaro . Betroka has a secondary school; The family of the musician D'Gary comes from the village .
