D. Phil Woodruff

David Philip Woodruff , also cited by Phil Woodruff or DP Woodruff , (born December 5, 1944 in the Manchester region ) is a British experimental solid-state physicist who is particularly concerned with the investigation of surfaces with synchrotron radiation .

Life

Woodruff attended the Manchester Grammar School, studied physics at the University of Bristol and received his doctorate in 1965 at the then newly founded University of Warwick under John Forty, where he has remained and became a professor ever since.

Initially he dealt with LEED spectroscopy. From 1986 he began to work in collaboration with Alexander M. Bradshaw at the Fritz Haber Institute in experiments at BESSY with synchrotron radiation for the investigation of surfaces, for example the structure of molecular absorbates on metal surfaces. The techniques he developed include photoelectron diffraction (PhD, scanned-energy mode photoelectron diffraction), with Bradshaw, where information about the chemical structure of the scattering centers on the surface is obtained from the interference of a photoelectron with the electrons scattered elastically in the environment. Another technique he has further developed is XSW (x-ray standing waves, see X-ray fluorescence analysis ). and especially NIXSW (Normal incidence x-ray standing wavefield absorption), which takes advantage of the fact that the absorption of X-rays by molecules varies greatly depending on the position near the belly or node of the standing wave. He worked on many synchrotron radiation sources around the world, but especially in Berlin (Bessy) and Daresbury ( Cheshire ).

Prizes and awards

In 1994 he and Alexander Bradshaw received the Max Planck Research Award . In 2003 he received the Mott Medal and in 2000 the Medard W. Welch Award. In 2011 he received the Max Born Prize for his pioneering work in the development of experimental techniques for the quantitative determination of surface structures, which provided new insights into a range of surface phenomena . He is a Fellow of the Royal Society .
