Vehicle designation on the car

The lounge car VT 10 551i was for the lightweight metal - trainset VT 10551 subsequently appointed and by Wegmann in Kassel built saloon car . It was used only a few times, but is the only vehicle from a class VT 10.5 railcar to survive.

history

The VT 10 551 built for the German Sleeping Car and Dining Car Company (DSG) and set up for night traffic was completed in 1953 and taken over by the DB in 1955. Directly from the German Transport Exhibition in 1953 , the train went on a promotional trip to Athens . As a highly modern train with all the comforts at the time, it also drew the covetousness of the political prominence of the young Federal Republic of Germany , who wanted to gain renown with it. In addition, the upscale equipment offered by a saloon car was missing. The VT 10 551i saloon car was therefore reordered - officially an add-on vehicle for use in public transport on the night train. In fact, however, the intermediate car for the multiple unit delivered in 1956 was only used for state journeys. The train caused high maintenance costs. Therefore, the DB decided to take the VT 10 551 out of service for the 1958 summer timetable. When cracks were found on the outer skin of the power cars, this happened on October 20, 1957. This meant that the VT 10 551i saloon car could no longer be used.

As for the rest of the train, a buyer was sought. Ultimately, the VT 10 551 was scrapped. The saloon car VT 10 551i escaped this fate because it was bought by the Nuremberg railroad fans, placed on a track yoke and is still used as a clubhouse today. After standing in the eastern apron of Nuremberg Central Station for years , it now stands next to Nuremberg-Stein station on the Nuremberg – Crailsheim railway line .

vehicle

The car was 11.6 m long and 3.024 m wide. It corresponded to the dimensions and technical equipment of the other intermediate cars of the multiple unit VT 10 551. In this special design, it could only be used in this train, so its use was dependent on the operation of the VT 10 551. The car had no outside door, so it could only be entered via the neighboring coupled car.

The VT 10 551i saloon car was based on the sequence of rooms that was common for saloon cars before the Second World War :

  • A salon set up as a “living room”, 5 m long, which extended over the entire width of the car. It was equipped with two crockery and a music cabinet with a radio . A table placed in the middle of the room was surrounded by six armchairs. There was also a floor lamp . In the salon there was also a window on each side that could be opened by a crank.
  • A spacious sleeping compartment compared to the compartments used in commercial traffic. In addition to the bed, which served as a sofa during the day, there were also two armchairs and a fold-up table that could serve as a temporary desk.
  • A bathroom with a sink, toilet and hip bath . These last two rooms were arranged next to a side corridor.
  • A cloakroom and a linen cupboard were located on the front wall of the vehicle on the saloon side, and at the opposite end of the vehicle there was another linen cupboard , a clothes cupboard and a switch cabinet.

business

Due to the limited performance of the engines of the VT 10 551, another car had to be removed from the train when the saloon car was added. If the vehicle was not in use, it was parked at Wegmann & Co. in Kassel. Only three missions are occupied:

When the VT 10 551 was given up in 1957, the saloon car could no longer be operated either.
