The DR 15-16 were steam powered rail cars based on the Doble system that were put into service by the Deutsche Reichsbahn . The vehicles were test railcars. The railcar No. 15 was converted as a sidecar and has been preserved in this form as a museum.

history

The vehicles were created because the Deutsche Reichsbahn was not satisfied with the performance of the combustion railcars after the International Railway Technology Exhibition in Seddin and was looking for alternatives for the drive.

For example, two experimental railcars could be equipped with steam engines based on the Doble system , which was used in some trucks in the United States around 1930 . The car bodies were manufactured by Wegmann & Co. in Kassel .

The steam engine for No. 15 came from original parts from Doble . A steam engine modified by Borsig was used for No. 16 , which is said to have done slightly more. No. 16 had a car body that was also manufactured by Wegmann and based on that of No. 15. The specified technical data describe No. 15.

Railcar no. 15 was used at the Pyritz depot in the Stettin Reich Railway Directorate .

Both vehicles did not meet the requirements in terms of the operating results. The change from low to maximum power from the railcar could not be achieved; the circulatory system reacted too slowly for that. After the arrival of the four-axle DR 51 to 53 , both cars were parked and converted into sidecars in 1939. While No. 16 is recorded as a war loss, No. 15 'went to the Deutsche Reichsbahn in the GDR . It was designated as VB 140 394 , from 1970 as 190 822-7 and was used as a rheostat system measuring and testing vehicle in Pasewalk . It has been preserved in a museum.
