The nature reserve Rurtal with the rock formations of the Uhusley is located in the municipality of Simmerath and accompanies the Rur from Monschau to the Rurtalsperre .

Rur valley between Monschau and Rurtalsperre
The Rurtal in this nature reserve can be divided into two different parts. From Monschau to Grünental, the valley is rather narrow. The Rur takes up almost the entire width. The valley slopes are steep with vertical rock faces in places. The water is of high quality which is due to the occurrence of numerous insect larvae such B. caddis flies or mayflies is displayed. Here is also an almost closed border of wooded banks. Below Grünenthal, the valley floor is a hundred to two hundred and forty meters wide and flows through grassland. South of Hammer , on a north slope, there is a steep slope with a spring forest planted with a ravine forest. The grassland here is mostly drained with ryegrass pastures and mountain oat meadows. At the drainage ditches, you can find meadow knot , snake knotweed and wood cranesbill . Far to the east there are small wet pastures and wet grassland fallow. A larger maedesweed corridor with sprinkled spring corridor and sedge stock south of Dedenborn shows the first signs of encroachment with shrub willows.

The southern steep slope on the Rur with slate rock and dry valleys in between is overgrown with oak forest. Typical cripple forest with closed ground cover on the rocks . In the open rocky area have broom and heather settled. The rocks are overgrown with potted fern , moss and lichen . In the valleys there are well-developed stands of sycamore , hornbeam , and beech trees with a trunk diameter of up to 70 cm, including areas of silver leaf , pearl grass or forest bladder . At the beginning of the small side valleys, Spleenwort spring meadows .
Rurtalhang south of Dedenborn
The east to north-east steep slope with slate cliffs and two spring depths is forested close to nature. Light rock areas are covered with moss and lichen. In some places there are small heather and spotted fern stocks. To the northeast is a small old ash-beech stand with silver leaf. After a short run, small spring streams flow into the Rur.
Protection purpose
The habitats are to be protected for many according to the red list of endangered plants, fungi and animals in NRW . The area primarily serves to maintain a near-natural stretch of flowing water as a habitat for threatened plant and animal species and the conservation and development of natural habitats in accordance with Annex I of the Habitats Directive: flowing water with underwater vegetation, moist high perennial fringes, oat and Wiesenknopf - Silgen meadows , mountain sewing meadows, silicate rocks with crevices vegetation silicate rocks with their pioneer vegetation , woodrush n- beech nwald, gorge - and slope mixed forests, following to preserve species: Greater mouse-eared , pond bat , kingfisher , dipper whinchat , black woodpecker , gray woodpecker , bullhead and yellow daffodil and bog asphodel .
These types of biotopes can be found in this area: springs , wet and humid grassland, near-natural unspoilt stream sections, canyon, block and hillside rubble forests, natural rock formations, block rubble heaps , caves and abandoned tunnels , dwarf shrub heath , rough meadows and pastures.
