The Henschel DH 440 series is a three-axle diesel-hydraulic locomotive that was built by the Henschel works . It is intended for use in shunting services. The locomotives belong to the so-called 2nd generation of the Henschel locomotives and are driven by a coupling rod . It has a C wheel arrangement and six copies were built between 1956 and 1958.
DSB MH (I)
In 1958, the Danish State Railways (DSB) wanted to test a diesel-hydraulic shunting locomotive. For this purpose, a locomotive was rented from Henschel, which was painted in the colors of Henschel on delivery. The locomotive had the work designation DH 440 , which stood for diesel , hydraulic and 440 hp.
DSB decided to purchase a total of three locomotives, which were given the class designation MH (I) and the company numbers MH 201-203 . The test locomotives were not sent back to Henschel, only two new locomotives came to Denmark in August 1958. These were given the numbers 201 and 202, while the test locomotive was given the number 203. Later, like the other two locomotives, the test locomotive was repainted in green at the time of delivery.
The 201 and 202 were in use until 1993 and the 203 until 1996 in Københavns Godsbanegård (Gb) and were then shut down . While the 201 was immediately scrapped, the 202 was first used as a museum locomotive, but then scrapped in 2001. The 203 got its original blue color back in 2006 and at that time was in the DSB Museum in Randers . It was sold to Germany in 2019.
From 1960 to 1965, Maschinenfabrik A / S Frichs in Aarhus built 120 machines without a license. These were given the series designation MH (II) .

The Mannesmannröhren-Werke received one locomotive , one the Deutsche Eisenbahn-Betriebsgesellschaft (DBEG) in Hameln and one the RWE Frimmersdorf power station .

Whereabouts
Three locomotives are preserved in a museum. In addition to the DSB MH 203 in Padborg (2020), the RWE locomotive is in the Rheinisches Industriebahn-Museum and the DBEG locomotive at the Eisenbahnfreunde Breisgau in Freiburg. The whereabouts of the Mannesmann locomotive is unknown.
