Da laughs was the first entertainment show on GDR television . It is considered the forerunner of the GDR Saturday evening show Ein Kessel Buntes .

1955 emerged from the 1953 u. a. by the quizmaster Rolf Krickow launched radio show Da der Bär laughs a television show on Wednesday evening, which should be a combination of show and cabaret.

While the West was already aligning TV entertainment with American show formats, the GDR was striving for a mixture of show and politics. Initially, the show had a strongly emphasized, political motive. The moderators - the three microphone operators - each represented a German region: Heinz Quermann ( Saxony ) - Gustav Müller ( Rhineland ) and alternately Herbert Köfer ( East Berlin ) and Gerhard Wollner ( West Berlin ). With the slogan Germans at one table , the 4th SED Party Congress had issued a slogan calling for negotiations on German unity without the inclusion of the victorious powers. In this episode, the television program should make its political contribution.

Since the bear laughs , not least through the punchlines of the moderators and the occasional appearance of western artists, gained great popularity with the audience. Until the spring of 1957, the format was broadcast from the German Sports Hall on Karl-Marx-Allee in Berlin-Friedrichshain , before the two-hour show was moved to the old Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin-Mitte .

The popularity of the show also brought the GDR Politburo on the scene. Since October 1957 there has been a three-year broadcast break without giving any reason. In September 1960, Da Laughs Bear returned to the screen. After the wall was built in 1961, the former broadcasting concept became obsolete, so from then on everything concentrated on the entertaining part.

In the 46th edition - also the last show - a. a. the western stars Roy Black and Trude Herr . In the meantime, the moderators had been replaced once by Gerd E. Schäfer and Manfred Uhlig . It is unclear why the program was discontinued in 1965. The program Ein Kessel Buntes (from 1972) is regarded as its successor.
