The umbrella organization was founded in 1982 and is currently (2015) with 12 member associations and around 1700 individual members in 14 local groups, the largest environmental protection organization in South Tyrol. activity

According to its own statements, the umbrella organization for nature and environmental protection sees its main task as "spreading the idea of nature conservation among the South Tyrolean population" and "carrying out actions against the impairment and destruction of our landscape and natural resources". The association tries to achieve this objective essentially through broad-based public relations work, which includes its own information events and publications up to the award of an annual negative price ( Golden Lugenbeitl ).

In addition to its public relations work, the umbrella association takes part directly in the conception and implementation of environmental protection projects, whereby it is particularly active in the field of concept design and fundraising . As a recognized nature conservation organization, the umbrella association is also involved in political decision-making processes at regional and local level. It provides representatives in municipal building commissions as well as in the landscape protection commissions and in the EIA advisory board of the South Tyrolean provincial administration.
