The Dag Hammarskjöld Library (officially Dag Hammarskjold Library ) is a library , located in the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City is. It is named after the Swedish politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dag Hammarskjöld , the second Secretary General of the United Nations . As a special library by mandate, the library aims to serve the information needs of the staff of the mission and the secretariat. To this end, it collects publications from and about the United Nations and, in some cases, also from specialized agencies . The Dag Hammarskjöld Library manages the UN 's global library system .

The library was founded in 1946 under the name United Nations Library , and the legislative mandate was voted on September 28, 1949. The library was later renamed the United Nations International Library . The Ford Foundation donated US $ 6.2 million to build a new library building . Shortly after the accidental death of Dag Hammarskjöld, the library was renamed Dag Hammarskjöld Library on November 16, 1961 .

The library's holdings include the Woodrow-Wilson collection on the League of Nations . The collection was donated to the library by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation in 1950. Around 200 recordings of interviews with well-known personalities and over 9800 magazines can also be viewed. The library also has an extensive map collection with over 80,000 maps as well as atlases, travel guides and other geographical reference works and a large collection of legal and scientific literature.
