Dagobert Schwabach (born May 6, 1846 in Sondershausen , † February 27, 1920 in Berlin ) was a German otologist .

Life

Schwabach studied in Berlin and Würzburg where he received his doctorate in 1870. There in Würzburg he worked under Anton Friedrich von Tröltsch . From 1872 he practiced as a specialist in ear diseases in Berlin. After graduating, Schwabach first worked under August Lucae in Berlin.

In 1873, together with the neurologist Albert Eulenburg and a few other doctors, he founded the Berlin General Policlinic, whose ear department he headed from 1873 to 1903. He was also a co-founder of the German Otological Society , on whose board he had been active since 1900 and whose chairman he became in 1910. He was one of the co-founders and second chairman of the Berlin Otological Society , an honorary member of which he was appointed after his resignation as chairman. He carried the title of Privy Medical Council .

Schwabach test

The Schwabach test named after him is a hearing test (1885). It is performed with a tuning fork by first placing the shaft of the vibrating tuning forks on the patient's mastoid process until the patient is no longer aware of anything. The examiner then immediately places the tuning fork on his own mastoid. Then the test is repeated in reverse order. The prerequisite is that the examining person has normal hearing. If the patient now hears the tone longer than the doctor, "positive Schwabach", that speaks for conductive hearing loss . If the examiner hears more than the patient, this gives an indication of the patient's inner ear hearing loss . The Schwabach test compares the examiner's bone conduction with that of the patient.

The Schwabach test or attempt is obsolete, as an audiogram is necessary if an inner ear hearing loss is suspected . In this respect, the audiological tuning fork tests are merely indicative.
