Dainipponjin - The Great Japanese ( Jap. 大日本人 ) is a Japanese monster horror - mockumentary of the comedian and director Hitoshi Matsumoto from 2007. The film is mostly in interview style turned and provides a humorous way, the life of a fictional super (anti) heroes.

content

Masaru Daisato, who lives close to subsistence level, has the ability to transform himself to about a hundred times his body size through high-voltage surges . This ability is used by the Japanese Ministry of Defense to use it as a weapon against giant monsters that appear sporadically in the cities of Japan. The fights are shown on television, which has given him a certain notoriety. The aspect of security is completely ignored by his environment - all that counts is the extremely low entertainment value of his actions against the monsters. However, people perceive his actions not as heroic, but as embarrassing annoyance and disturbance of the peace.

As the film progresses, one learns many small, embarrassing details of his life: He is not divorced, but lives apart from his wife and daughter. He would have liked to use this as the “heir” of his abilities. His wife considers this to be unacceptable and at the same time represents the reason for the separation. He also has a manager who makes him struggle with advertising space painted on his body and cheat him of the sponsored income.

Production and publication

The film was produced by RealProduct and Yoshimoto Kogyo Company and directed by Hitoshi Matsumoto. The music was composed by Towa Tei and Soichi Ueno was responsible for the editing.

The film was released in Japanese cinemas on June 2, 2007. This was followed by demonstrations in Hong Kong , Great Britain and the USA. The German cinema premiere was on July 17, 2008. Dainipponjin was also shown at film festivals in several countries.

Reviews

78% of the 32 counted reviews on the Rotten Tomatoes website are positive. The consensus of the critics is summed up as follows: "Hitoshi Matsumoto's strange and elusive mockumentary is definitely inspired."

“Unfortunately, Matsumoto does not manage to combine the disparate parts of his film into a thoroughly enjoyable whole. In particular, the poor interlocking of the real and the fight scenes means that both the satirical and the spectacular impetus fizzle out somewhat in the course of the film. "
