Daikin Industries, Ltd. ( Japanese ダ イ キ ン 工業 株式会社 , Daikin Kōgyō Kabushiki kaisha ) is a Japanese company with headquarters in Osaka , which is listed in the Nikkei 225 share index, among other things .

history

Akira Yamada founded the company in Osaka in 1924 as 大阪 金属 工業 所, Ōsaka Kinzoku Kōgyōsho for the production of radiator tubes for aviation. With the start of research into fluorinated refrigerants in 1933, the foundation stone was laid for today's global market leadership in the air conditioning sector. As the first company in Japan, Ōsaka Kinzoku Kōgyō was able to start producing fluorine-based refrigerants in 1935 and in 1936 to provide Japan's first air conditioning systems for trains. The product portfolio expanded in the 1950s to include heat pump systems and fluoropolymers, and in the following decades was continuously developed and enriched with innovations such as the world's first commercial multi-split air conditioning system VRV or Ururu Sarara, the first humidity-regulating air conditioning unit without a separate water supply.

In 1963 Ōsaka Kinzoku Kōgyō was renamed to Daikin Kōgyō : the name Daikin is a portmanteau word from Ōsaka Kinzoku and is made up of the first kanji大 for Ōsaka (whose on-reading is dai ) and the first kanji K for kinzoku . The English version of Daikin Industries has been used since 1982 .

In the mid-1960s, Daikin's international business grew in importance. The first branch outside of Japan was established in Australia in 1969 . Daikin Europe followed in 1973 in Ostend , Belgium and sales offices in Singapore , Thailand and Hong Kong in the 1980s. Production and sales of fluorochemicals were also expanded with the establishment of Daikin America in 1991 and Daikin Chemical Europe in 1992. At the end of the 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s, there was also a massive increase in global production and sales capacities in air conditioning and refrigeration technology; Among other things, Daikin Airconditioning Germany was founded in Unterhaching in 1998 .

In November 2006, Daikin Industries acquired the OYL Group , which also includes its subsidiary McQuay International . In 2015, Daikin acquired the refrigerants business from Solvay : The production of refrigerants and propellants for drug sprays, among other things, located in the Höchst Industrial Park in Frankfurt, has been operating as Daikin Refrigerants Europe GmbH since May 2015. At the end of October 2017, Daikin took over Heroflon, an Italian producer of fluoropolymer compounds.

Daikin Industries now includes the German subsidiaries Daikin Airconditioning Germany (based in Unterhaching), Daikin Chemical Europe (based in Düsseldorf) and Daikin Refrigerants Europe (based in Frankfurt).

structure

In the 2019 financial year, almost 90% of sales were generated with air conditioning systems , 8% with fluorochemicals and 2% with hydraulic technology.
