Daisy Leura Nakamarra

Daisy Leura Nakamarra (* 1936 at Umbungurru Creek near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory , Australia ) is an important Aboriginal artist. She lives and works in Narwietooma Station in the Northern Territory.

Life

She belongs to the language group of the Anmatyerre . Daisy was married to Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri , one of the founders of the Papunya Tula artist movement. With him and their six children she came to Papunya , an artist community in the Northern Territory.

Her husband introduced her to painting. Her active period began in 1981 and she became one of the first Aboriginal women whose artistic works found public recognition. The themes of her work deal with the dream time of women and Bush Tucker . When creating her works, she makes sure that only secular themes are presented.

Her paintings are mainly exhibited in public collections in Australia, such as the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra , Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide , Flinders University Art Museum in Bedford Park and the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.
