Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri

Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri , also known as Timmy Leurah Tjapaltjarri , Tjapaltjarri , Djabaldjari and Tim Leura , (* 1930 Napperby Creek in the Northern Territory , Australia ; † 1984 ) was an Aboriginal artist, painter and wood carver. He was one of the founders of the Papunya Tula .

Life

Tjapaltjarri grew up in Napperby Station in the Northern Territory and worked as a drover. He comes from the Aborigines of the Anmatyerre and was married to Daisy Leura Nakamarra . He had six children with her. His younger brother was the Aboriginal artist Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri . In the 1950s, when the Aboriginal settlement Papunya was founded , he went there with his young family.

Artistic life

Before he started painting in the 1970s, he was known as a wood carver in the Western Desert area . In Papunya he came into contact with Geoffrey Bardon and became his close friend. Bardon, an art teacher, motivated the Aborigines living in Papunya to paint. Under his influence, Tjapaltjarri developed into one of the first and leading painters of the early Papunya artist movement.

Works

The dreamtime themes depicted in his paintings were primarily possum , yam , fire, bluetongue skink , sun, moon and morning star.

His most important work is the 8.2 m tall Napperby Death Spirit (Possum) Dreaming : This picture, which he created with the support of Clifford Possum, is considered the most important work of this early artistic movement.
