Daly River

Daly River is a town in the north of the Australian territory Northern Territory . At the last census in 2016, the small town had 127 inhabitants.

The city is located on the lower reaches of the river of the same name , 222 km south of Darwin and 311 km northwest of Katherine . Today the former mining town consists of little more than a pub with a few motel rooms, a police station and a free caravan park. It is located a few kilometers downstream from the bridge over which an asphalt road leads from the important tourist route, the Stuart Highway .

history

The indigenous people of the area around the city are the Malak Malak , who live downstream in the Aboriginal reservations of Nauiyu and Wooliana .

The river was discovered in 1865 by Boyle Finniss , the former Prime Minister of South Australia , accompanied by Frederick Henry Litchfield - at that time the Northern Territory was still part of South Australia - and named after Sir Dominick Daly .

In 1882 copper was discovered in the river and European colonization of the area began.

The Daly River settlement was the scene of particularly bloody skirmishes between the local Aborigines and the miners. In 1884 three miners were murdered. The miners in town were taking revenge on the local Aborigines that was disproportionate to the crime committed. A year later, the Roman Catholic Church established a mission, presumably aware of the tensions. As a result, 75% of the population today belong to the Roman Catholic denomination.

There have been a number of attempts to attract more people to Daly River over the course of the 20th century, but with no real success. In 1911 the federal government tried to convince people to move to the city. In the 1920s there were plans for peanut and tobacco plantations , but they were never realized. Planting cashew nuts and sugar cane was also unsuccessful. In 1967 the Tipperary Land Corporation cleared large parts of the land around the city and began planting sorghum , but the venture was abandoned in 1973.

Attractions

The city serves as a base for visitors to the Daly River Nature Park and for sport fishermen who want to catch barramundi . Saltwater crocodiles , other reptiles , spiders , cockatoos , wild boars and water buffalo can be found in the park . The vegetation consists of mangroves , huge bamboo , screw trees and kapok trees .

From the Daly River Road branches off 5 km east of the city a cul-de-sac to Wooliana , a tent and caravan site on the river bank. There are a number of such places in the area. Directly at the entrance to the village, a road branches off to the Nauiyu Aboriginal Community , where the Roman Catholic Mission and the Merrepen Arts Center are to be found, in which objects of art made by Aborigines are offered.
