geography
River course
The river arises at the confluence of the Flora River and Katherine River at Round Hill , about 2 km north of the Flora River Nature Park . From there, the Daly River flows northwest along the Wagiman and Upper Daly Aboriginal Reserves . The Rock Candy Range diverts the river to the west. At the western end of this mountain range, it turns its course back to the northwest and flows through the small town of Daly River . West of the small town of Litchfield , approx. 120 km south of Darwin , the Daly River flows into Anson Bay , a bay in the Timor Sea .

history
The river was discovered by Europeans in 1865 by Boyle Finniss , the first Prime Minister of South Australia and Government Resident of the Northern Territory, accompanied by Frederick Henry Litchfield . Finniss named the river after Sir Dominick Daly , the governor of South Australia, as the Northern Territory was then part of South Australia. The region remained untouched until 1882; then they found copper there .
Sport fishing
The Daly River is known for its large barramundi and is therefore very popular as a fishing water. Two sport fishing competitions are held there every year, the Barra Classic and the Barra Nationals .
It is best to fish the barramundi immediately after the rainy season has ended , when the water level in the river drops quickly and clear water flows in from the floodplains. There are many bait fish in the flood water , which in turn attract the predatory fish Barramundi. The conditions in the river are eagerly discussed by sport fishermen during the season.
