Dan Potra

Dan Potra (born July 28, 1978 in Timișoara ) is a former Romanian artistic gymnast .

Potra started gymnastics in Timisoara at the age of five. In 1992 he was accepted into the junior national team and at the 1996 European Junior Championships he won bronze on the pommel horse. He then graduated from the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport at the Western Timișoara University . From 2000 Potra was part of the Romanian national team in Bucharest. In 2001 he became Romanian all-around champion.

At the Gymnastics World Championships in Ghent in 2001 Potra reached fourth place in the all-around competition and sixth place with the Romanian team. In 2002 he became double European champion at the European Championships in Patras, when he won the title both in the all- around and with the team. Potra was the first Romanian in gymnastics history to become European all-around champion. At the 2003 World Gymnastics Championships Potra was fifth with the Romanian gymnastics team.

In 2004 Potra won gold again with the team ahead of Belarus and France at the European Championships in Ljubljana . The highlight of the year, however, was the Summer Olympics in Athens , where the Romanians won the bronze medal behind Japan and the United States . At the 2006 World Gymnastics Championships , the Romanian team came fourth behind Japan.

In 2007/08 Potra did gymnastics in Germany for the KTG Heidelberg . After his active career, he became a coach at Dinamo Bucharest.

Dan Potra was made an honorary citizen of Timișoara in 2004.
