Life

Gardner was born in St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin and grew up in Lanesboro , a small rural community in Minnesota. There were several artists in his family who sparked his interest in bird and nature illustration from an early age. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Minnesota in 1972, he served in the military in the former Panama Canal Zone , where he first came into contact with tropical birds. In 1974 Gardner met ornithologist Alexander Frank Skutch in Panama , for whom he had illustrated 18 books over the next 28 years, including Nature Through Tropical Windows (1983), Life of the Woodpecker (1985), Guide to the Birds of Costa Rica ( 1989) and Life of the Pigeon (1991). After the military service he worked as an illustrator for the biological department of the Universidad del Valle in Cali , Colombia . He then worked for a few years as a freelance illustrator in Costa Rica. In 1978 Gardner moved to Los Angeles , where he worked for the Western Foundation of Vertebrate Zoology until 1994. During this time he traveled to Central America, South America and Southeast Asia, where he illustrated field guides about Singapore , Thailand , Bhutan , Wallacea , East Timor , the Yap Islands , Belize , Mexico , Colombia and Peru . In 2011 the University of California Botanical Garden published the book Illustrated Guide to Common Animals of the East Bay Hills on the fauna of the Berkeley Hills in California, in which 125 animals, including ten reptiles, five amphibians, 18 mammals, 61 birds, Twenty-one insects and a snail have been depicted by Gardner.
