Danderhall is a village in the Scottish Council Area Midlothian . It lies on the northern border of the region. The Edinburgh district of Gilmerton borders directly to the west . The city center is about seven kilometers to the northwest.

history

Like many other towns in the north of Midlothian, Danderhall developed with coal mining, which was pursued in various mines in the area until the 1990s. The decline in coal mining resulted in economic difficulties for the small community. Many social housing buildings shape the image of Danderhall.

1951 were counted in Danderhall 1105 inhabitants. Over the next two decades, the population rose to 3,130 in 1971 before falling to 2,599 by 1991. Since then, it has recovered slightly to the last 2732 in 2011.

1686 which was outside Danderhall mansion Woolmet House built. As a result of extensive coal mining, cracks appeared in the masonry at the beginning of the 20th century. The building eventually fell into disrepair and had to be demolished in 1954.

Located in the immediate vicinity of Edinburgh, Danderhall is well connected to the trunk road network. The A1 , A7 , A68 , A720 and A772 roads are just a few kilometers away. With the Edinburgh Airport is an international airport some 15 km to the west. Danderhall never had its own train station. With the construction of the Borders Railway in the 2010s, however, the Shawfair station is opened two kilometers east , which is also intended to serve as the infrastructural link to Danderhall.
