Daniel Azulay

Daniel Azulay (born May 30, 1947 in Rio de Janeiro , Brazil ; † March 27, 2020 there ) was a Brazilian comic artist and cartoonist , author, musician, television presenter, painter and illustrator .

Live and act

Daniel Azulay comes from a Jewish Sephardic family with roots in Moroccan Jews who emigrated to Brazil. Azulay was very active in the Jewish community of Rio de Janeiro. He studied law from 1969 and taught himself how to draw comics. During this time, the first cartoons appeared in newspapers and magazines.

He was versatile as a painter, sculptor, musician, author, illustrator of children's books and as a television presenter of children's programs with educational content.

With his broadcasts he shaped educational television in Brazil from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. Part of the programs were creative ideas to make exciting and safe toys from regional products, to explain drawing to the children and to sensitize them to the topics of waste avoidance and environmental protection .

Between 1982 and 1984 he published the children's newspaper "Revista de a turma do lambe-lambe", which had 20 issues.

He had been battling chronic leukemia for a long time and was infected with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital , which resulted in his death from COVID-19 in March 2020 . He was the first prominent COVID-19 death in Brazil.
