Daniel Fernandes (Judoka)

Daniel Fernandes (born March 14, 1973 in Nogent-le-Rotrou ) is a former French judoka . He was second in the 2003 World Cup. At European Championships he won a silver medal and two bronze medals.

Athletic career

The 1.75 m tall Daniel Fernandes fought in the lightweight, the weight class up to 71 kilograms, from 1998 to 73 kilograms. In 1995 he won his only French championship. At the Olympic Games in 1996 Christophe Gagliano and 2000 Ferrid Kheder competed in the lightweight for France. At the French championships in 2001 Christophe Massina won ahead of Fernandes, behind Gagliano and Kheder the bronze medals. A month later Fernandes won the Tournoi de Paris with a final victory over the South Korean Choi Yong-shin . At the 2001 European Championships , also held in Paris, he lost to the Italian Giuseppe Maddaloni in the semifinals . In the battle for a bronze medal, he defeated the Pole Krzysztof Wiłkomirski . At the 2001 World Championships in Munich, Fernandes was eliminated in the first round against Israeli Yoel Razvozov .

At the beginning of 2002 Fernandes reached the Jigoro Kano Cup in second place behind the Japanese Masahiro Takamatsu . Shortly afterwards he was also runner-up at the Super World Cup tournament in Moscow. After that, Fernandes was only in front in team competitions for a year and a half. At the 2003 World Championships in Osaka , he then reached the final with a semi-final victory over the Russian Vitaly Makarov , where he was defeated by the South Korean Lee Won-hee . The following year he met at the Olympic Games in Athens again in the semifinals on Makarov, this time defeated Fernandes, who then lost the battle for bronze against Jimmy Pedro from the United States.

At the beginning of 2005 Fernandes won the Tournoi de Paris as in 2001, this time defeating the Slovenian Sašo Jereb in the final . At the European Championships in Rotterdam in 2005 Fernandes lost to the Latvian Vsevolods Zeļonijs in the round of 16 . With four wins in the Hope Round, the French then won a bronze medal. At the World Championships in Cairo , he retired in his opening fight against the Georgian Dawit Kewchishvili . 2006 Fernandes reached the final at the European Championships in Tampere with a semi-final victory over the Belarusians Kanstanzin Sjamjonau . Fernandes received the silver medal behind the Azerbaijani Elnur Məmmədli . In 2007 he was eliminated from the European Championships in Belgrade in his opening match against the Israeli Yoel Razvozov. At the 2007 World Championships and the 2008 European Championships , he was eliminated after losing to Dawit Kewchishvili.
