Daniel Leo (Mafioso)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Daniel Leo (also known as "Danny the Lion" ) (* around 1941) is an American mobster and is considered the current head of the Genovese family in New York City .

Life

In his youth in the 1970s, Leo was a member of the violent East Harlem Purple Gang , an association of around 127 drug dealers and other gangsters who later became members of the Lucchese or Genovese families. Although Leo was mentioned in the 1976 Drug Enforcement Administration Report of the police, and thus was considered a well-known drug dealer, he has not yet received a single prison sentence.

The only known arrest to date dates back to 1980 when authorities were investigating drug trafficking , usury of credit and murder . His rise in the hierarchy became clear when, in October 1999 , the FBI wiretapped Genovese Capo Salvatore "Sammy Meatballs" Aparo, who was talking about the acceptance ceremony of his son Vincent Aparo with fourteen other candidates by Lawrence "Little Larry" Dentico and Ernest Muscarella, assisted by Daniel Leo.

Since October 2000 his close connection to Vincent Gigante through the capo Alan "Baldy" Longo is known. There is the thesis that he was head of the family from 2005; Dominick Cirillo and Mario Gigante were already under his command and were only perceived from the outside as subsequent bosses after Vincent Gigante.

After a less than successful time in New Jersey , Daniel Leo resides in New York again and faced various charges. In early 2008, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Daniel Leo was in the Metropolitan Detention Center Brooklyn during this period and his release date was initially scheduled for October 7, 2011.

However, in January 2010, he pleaded guilty to other crimes under the original indictment and could be sentenced to an additional 40 years.

In March 2010, he was sentenced to an additional 18 months and fined $ 1.3 million. Due to this new prison sentence, many see Liborio Bellomo as a possible successor, who already leads the parliamentary group in Manhattan as an underboss.

Leo served his sentence at the Federal Correctional Complex (Coleman) in Florida and was released on January 25, 2013.
