Daniël Mijtens or Daniel Mytens the Elder (* 1590 in Delft ; † 1647 in The Hague ) was an important English painter with Flemish roots.

Life

Daniël Mijtens came from a Flemish family of artists and studied with Michiel van Mierevelt in The Hague. Around 1618 he was demonstrably in the service of the leading art collector Sir Thomas Howard, 21st Earl of Arundel in London . Two years later he got his first royal commission. After Paul van Somer's death , Mijtens succeeded him as court painter. Shortly thereafter, he worked several times for the Prince of Wales , and this assisted him in 1624 with naturalization. After the death of Jacob I , he retained the title of royal portrait painter . The following year, Mijtens went to the Netherlands for six months on behalf of Charles I to familiarize himself with the art of his time. Mijtens retained his prominence as the king's portrait painter until 1632, when Anthony van Dyck succeeded him and soon afterwards he withdrew to The Hague, disappointed.

His nephew Jan Mytens also became a painter and was possibly his pupil.
