Daniel J. Owen (* 1732 in Chepachet , Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations ; † October 21, 1812 ibid) was a British politician and lawyer in North America.

Daniel J. Owen was the son of Ruth Angell (1709–1804) and Thomas Owen (1707–1798). On August 15, 1756, he married in Smithfield (Rhode Island) Hannah Angell (1736-1820), daughter of Lydia Winsor (1709-1793) and John Angell (1709-1760). The couple had at least four children together: Thomas (1767–1849), Naomi (1768–1808), Daniel (1776–1804) and Joseph (1778–1866)

Life

Owen was a farmer in Providence County . He ran an iron foundry on his farm. John Paul Jones (1747–1792) was his partner before the outbreak of the War of Independence . Owen was a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly in 1775 and 1776 . During this time he was elected to the committee responsible for raising gold and silver for the invasion of Canada . He was also one of the applicants in the General Assembly who wanted the sole right to mint the first US cents in this colony, which they were granted in 1787.

Between May 1786 and May 1790 Owen held the post of Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island. He was a member and president of the Constituent Assemblies of Rhode Island in March 1790 in South Kingstown and in May 1790 in Newport , which passed the US Constitution . In his capacity as President of the Convention, he then informed US President George Washington by means of a letter that Rhode Island was the last state to adopt the US Constitution.

In 1790 he was elected Judge and in 1794 Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court . After his death he was buried in Glocester public cemetery.
