In the summer of 1996, he decided to study at Colorado College . There he was consequently for the ice hockey team in the Collegeliga Western Collegiate Hockey Association , a league in the game operations of the NCAA , active.

The defensive player was one of the team's top performers at the Colorado College Tigers and was also one of the defenders with the highest points. After he finished his studies after the prescribed time of four years, he was able to have a total of 136 completed league games for the Tigers, in which he scored 76 points. For the 2000/01 season he moved without ever being drafted by a team from the National Hockey League , in the American Hockey League to the Philadelphia Phantoms .

Dan Peters stayed in Philadelphia for three seasons and never got a chance to prove himself in the NHL during that time. Finally, in 2003, he forced a move to Europe, where those responsible for the Frankfurt Lions from the German Ice Hockey League became aware of the then 25-year-old and provided him with a one-year contract. Peters was able to reach the play-off final of the 2003/04 season with the Lions and defeat the favorite Eisbären Berlin with 3-1 games. The American was able to win the German championship with the Lions in his first season .

However, his contract was not renewed at the end of the season and so the left-shot returned to North America, where the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies from the ECHL took him under contract. Peters ended his active ice hockey career in the summer of 2005 at the age of 27.
