Daniel Secrétan

Daniel Secrétan (born November 5, 1895 in Morrens , Canton of Vaud , † February 1, 1971 in Dornach SO , Canton of Solothurn ) was a Swiss diplomat .

Life

Secrétan, the son of Pastor Gustave Secrétan and his wife Marie Charlier, completed a degree in humanities at the University of Lausanne after attending school . He then joined the diplomatic service in 1919 and became a legation attaché in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Political Department (today the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs ). He was then a member of the delegation to the League of Nations between 1921 and 1928, and from 1925 to 1927 he was second secretary in the foreign affairs department of the Political Department. From 1931 to 1939 he was general secretary of the boarding school. Institute for Intellectual Cooperation IICI (Institut international de coopération intellectuelle) in Paris , an institution of the League of Nations for the coordination of work and scientific relations. On September 19, 1939, he returned to the Political Department, where he was from 1942 to 1946 as Legation Councilor and head of the Section for International Associations in the Department for Foreign Affairs.

On January 15, 1946, Secrétan became a member of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and on February 15, 1946 a member of the delegation to the International Conference on Public Education. On March 25, 1946, he returned to the Political Department and was there until May 9, 1948, head of the Directorate for International Organizations. On May 9, 1948, he succeeded Alfred Brunner as envoy in Egypt and held this post until August 5, 1949, after which he was replaced by Beat von Fischer . At the same time he was accredited as envoy to Iraq between May 9, 1948 and August 5, 1949 .

Secrétan succeeded Robert Kohli as envoy in the Netherlands on January 4, 1950 and remained in this post until March 31, 1957. His successor there was Edouard de Haller .

His younger brother Jacques Secrétan was a professor at the University of Lausanne and in 1945 a member of the United Nations Consultative Commission .
