Life

Kohli studied law in Bern. Since 1918, already during his studies, he worked for the Federal Political Department . He rose quickly in the hierarchy of officials. In the war years from 1939 to 1945 he was a member of the permanent delegation for business negotiations with foreign countries. Thanks to the skill of this negotiating delegation, Switzerland was largely able to maintain trade and supplies.

From 1945 Kohli was first envoy in The Hague and from 1949 he also represented Switzerland in Belgrade for four years . He reached the peak of his career in 1956 as head of the Department for Political Affairs and Secretary General of the Federal Political Department. Kohli remained in this highest-ranking position in Swiss diplomacy until 1961. This made him the “right-hand man” of Federal Councilor Max Petitpierre .
