Daniel Waterland

Daniel Waterland (born February 14, 1683 in Walesby , Lincolnshire , † November 23 or December 23, 1740 ) was an English theologian of the Church of England at the beginning of the 18th century.

Life

Waterland attended school in Lincoln before going to Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge . There he graduated in 1703 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and in 1706 with a Master of Arts (MA). He was ordained on June 7, 1705 and a priest on March 9, 1705. He then went through various stations until he became a Master of Magdalene College in 1713 . He held this position until his death and was also chancellor of the Archdiocese of York from 1722 and archdeacon of Middlesex from 1730 .

Waterland was married to Theodosia Tregonwell, daughter of theologian John Tregonwell. He was buried in Windsor , Berkshire in 1740 .

Act

Waterland was a sharp and often controversial champion of the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity . His main work was written in 1724: A critical History of the Athanasian Creed: Representing the Opinions of Antients and Moderns concerning it: with an Account of Manuscripts, Versions, and Comments, and such Other Particulars as are of Moment for the Determining the Age, and Author, and Value of it, and the Time of its Reception in the Christian Churches
