Thank you very much
Danke Schoen is the title of a song in 4/4 time that was composed by the orchestra director Bert Kaempfert , who worked in the USA in the early 1960s . It has been released by the record industry worldwide both as an instrumental piece and in sung versions.
Instrumental version
The instrumental version was first released in April 1963 in the USA on the long-playing record Bert Kaempfert and His Orchestra - Living It Up by the Decca Records record company under catalog number DL 74374. In May 1963 the single with the indication of the author Bert Kaempfert / Roy Ilene followed on Decca 31498. In the US hit lists the title Thank you Schoen could not be placed. In Germany, the LP Living It Up and the single Thank You Schön came onto the market in the fall of 1963 through the Polydor record company (catalog numbers 237 599 and 52 157). On the LP cover the track was listed as Candlelight Cafe . There was no hit parade listing in Germany either.
The melody has been used in numerous TV commercials and movie soundtracks, including Ferris Make Blue , Meet the Parents and Vegas Vacation .
Text versions
Around the same time that Dank Schoen was launched in the States , Decca’s UK parent company released a single with a text version in Great Britain, sung by British singer Craig Douglas , who was one of the UK’s most successful performers. Roy Ilene was named as the copywriter on the record label. This title could not place in the British charts. Also with the lyrics by Roy Ilene, a version with the only 21-year-old Wayne Newton was released by Capitol Records in the USA in June 1963 . This version in the strange spelling Thank you Schöen was included in the Hot 100 by the US music magazine Billbord and rose to 13th place. The US singer Connie Francis recorded Danke Schoen in several languages, including French, Spanish, Italian and Japanese. By Brenda Lee , there is a text version on an EP .
In Germany, Kurt Schwabach provided a text Thank you . The record company Polydor brought out two singles with the German lyrics, Ivo Robic . The first record was released under the number 52001, the first edition of the 52000 series, which therefore had to be produced at the beginning of 1963, before the instrumental version, which only came onto the German market in September. At the same time as the instrumental version, Polydor released Ivo Robić's second Danke-Schön single with a different B-side under the number 52 160. This was also registered by the music magazine Musikmarkt and was first listed in the top 50 on December 14, 1963. The title only made it to rank 47, as did the version with Anita Lindblom , which was also released by Philips at the same time . In 1964 the German CBS released a long-playing record with Bernd Spier under the title Thank you, and with a track of the same name, also in the Schwabach version. In the USA, too, the CBS parent company Columbia released an LP with Bernd Spier with the same title, whose tracks also include the German-language title Thank you .
