Daniel Olusola "Danny" Shittu (born September 2, 1980 in Lagos ) is a Nigerian football player . The central defender has been under contract with Millwall FC since August 2012 and took part in the 2010 World Cup.

Club career

Shittu came to London from Nigeria as a teenager and attended Hammersmith College after graduating from high school. He made the decision to pursue a professional career as a footballer late and for this reason joined the Carshalton Athletic youth team . After several unsuccessful trial training sessions, Charlton Athletic offered him a professional contract. In early 2001 he was awarded for the second half of the fourth division club Blackpool and reached the promotion playoffs with the team. In the successful playoff games against Hartlepool United and Leyton Orient , Shittu himself could no longer participate, as his loan contract had already expired.

In October 2001 he was awarded to the third division team Queens Park Rangers . Despite being sent off twice during his loan period, the West London club signed him for £ 350,000 during the winter break. Under coach Ian Holloway , he was promoted to the Football League Championship in 2004 . Shittu was also among the top performers in the following years and moved in 2006 for 1.6 million pounds to the first division promoted Watford FC .

In his first season in the English House of Lords, the tall and strong defender came to 34 missions, but could not prevent the relegation of the Hornets . In the following second division season he reached the promotion playoffs with Watford, but was eliminated from Hull City (0: 2 and 1: 4). Shittu's achievements (39 games / 7 goals) led to his nomination for the "PFA Championship Team of the Year" and to the interest of the Bolton Wanderers . On August 6, 2008 he signed a three-year contract with Bolton, Watford received a £ 2 million transfer fee.

In the fall of 2010 Shittu moved to Millwall FC in the Football League Championship after he had previously terminated his contract in Bolton. On January 27, 2011, he moved to the Queens Park Rangers in the Football League Championship 2010/11 and received a contract until the end of the season.

National team

Shittu made his debut for the Nigerian national team in 2002 in a friendly against Paraguay in London. He came as a substitute for a 20-minute assignment in the stadium of his employer at the time, QPR. It was not until 2007, when Berti Vogts took over the coaching position of the Super Eagles , that Shittu was called up again and was part of the regular player base in the following years. At the Africa Cup of Nations 2008 Shittu was one of the regular players on the defensive and was used in all four tournament games in Nigeria.

In 2010 Shittu was in Nigeria's squad for the World Cup in South Africa and was used in all three games.
