occupation

Daratt is a film by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun from Chad . It is a co-production of Chad, France , Belgium and Austria .

action

Atim, a sixteen-year-old, is assigned by his blind grandfather to kill his father's murderer. He hands him a pistol. Atim goes to the capital N'Djamena and finds Nassara, his father's murderer, but fails to shoot him. He moves into his house and helps out in his bakery. Nassara is now an honorable man who gives bread to the poor and who develops a certain affection for Atim, although he is very brittle. Atim has several opportunities to kill Nassara, but never manages to do so. After Aicha, Nassara's wife, miscarried, he wanted to adopt Atim. They both drive to Atim's hometown, where Atim's grandfather forces him to shoot Nassara. However, Atim shoots twice in the air. The blind grandfather considers the death of Atim's father to be avenged.

The film deals with the complicated situation in Chad, which had to live with the consequences of a civil war (1979–1982). A general amnesty for all those involved in the war seemed to make it particularly difficult for many citizens who were previously hostile to live together.

Emergence

Daratt was created on the occasion of the Mozart Year 2006 at the invitation of the director Peter Sellars , who at that time invited filmmakers for his New Crowned Hope Festival in Vienna to use the Mozart works Die Zauberflöte , La clemenza di Tito and Requiem as sources of inspiration. Mahamat-Saleh Haroun decided to reinterpret the Titus motifs forgiveness and reconciliation in Chad after the civil war.
