Darienheros calobrensis is a freshwater fish from the family of cichlids , which in the east of Panama, among others in Chucunaque River and the Río Bayano occurs.
features
Darienheros calobrensis reaches a maximum length of 26 cm and has a silvery-gray basic color. The sides of the body and unpaired fins are patterned with numerous, regularly arranged red dots. Females stay a little smaller and are a little less colorful. In the dorsal fin they have a dark colored zone. Young fish show a pattern with seven transverse bands and one dark longitudinal band. In adult fish, the longitudinal and transverse ligaments are usually no longer visible. Only during the breeding season do adults show the four rear vertical stripes. The mouth is slightly below, the lips are thick. The pre-orbital region of the skull (area in front of the eye socket (orbit)) is comparatively long. The eyes are arranged relatively high.
Way of life
Darienheros calobrensis lives in clear water rivers with a rocky bottom. So far nothing is known about nutrition in the wild. The fish become sexually mature with an age of one and a half years and a length of 15 cm. They form a father-mother family, ie the female takes care of the brood alone, while the less aggressive male defends the territory. If the young fish swim freely, they will be looked after by both parents.
Systematics
The species was described in 1913 by the American ichthyologists Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand under the name Cichlasoma calobrense and named after the Terra typica of the Rio Calobre , a tributary of the Río Bayano . Later she was assigned to Astatheros , Cichlasoma and Amphilophus . In 2016 the genus Darienheros was introduced, with Darienheros nourissati as the only species. The genus name is made up of Darien and Heros . Darién is a province of Panama on the border with Colombia, Heros is a genus of cichlids. Darienheros is the sister genus of Panamius .
