Dark Reign: The Future of War is a real-time strategy game from the Australian development studio Auran , which was published by Activision for Windows in 1997 . In 2013, a remake for the Xbox 360 game console was released via Xbox Live .

action

In the distant future, two parties will fight against each other in our galaxy: the technologically and materially superior empire and a force of insurgents, the Freedom Corps.

The Freedom Corps is a muddled bunch of former slaves of the Empire. The latter is a runaway agency trying to usurp control of the galaxy. To prevent an organized rebellion, implants are implanted in the necks of the slaves by their masters, which they kill when they are 25 years old; this is to prevent the development of leaders who might lead a rebellion. Nonetheless, at the time of the game, a bitter war is raging between the two factions, and the determined rebel force can stand up to the decadent empire.

Against this background, a third party tries to ensure their survival: The secret society Togras, which calls the player for help in the last mission. With the help of a time machine, the player can travel back to the point in time when a new imperial secret weapon not only destroyed an entire planet full of rebels, but also accidentally destroyed the headquarters of the Togran Order located there. The actual game turns out to be an "acceptance test" for the final mission.

Press review

Reviews in PC game magazines:

Dark Reign 2

In 2000, the sequel Dark Reign 2 was developed by Pandemic Studios and released again by Activision. The game tells the prehistory of the first part, but unlike in part 1 you only fight on earth and watch how the JVB (Jupiter Enforcement Authority) is changing more and more into an empire. While the predecessor was played from a two-dimensional bird's eye view, the successor now used contemporary 3D graphics. Effective Media GmbH took over the German localization.

The source code for Dark Reign 2 was published in 2011 by a previous Pandemic developer to prevent the game from remaining abandonware and no longer receiving support, but the legal status is unclear ( leak ).
