History of the collection

The Daros Collection was created in 1997. Stephan Schmidheiny took over a wide-ranging collection of over 1,000 individual works from his brother Alexander Schmidheiny, who died very young , which he had built up together with his childhood friend Thomas Ammann . In addition to outstanding individual works by Jackson Pollock and Barnett Newman, unique works by Andy Warhol and Cy Twombly formed the core of the bundle. Stephan Schmidheiny decided to sharpen the profile of the collection, to expand it and from now on to have it looked after by a professional structure - the Daros.

When he started collecting, Daros concentrated on American art from the second half of the 20th century. In addition to the sale of numerous works - u. a. by Francesco Clemente , David Reed , Philip Taaffe and Ross Bleckner - at the turn of the millennium the decision was made to add new artistic positions to the collection. The focus was on their importance for the development of contemporary art. Works by artists such as Gerhard Richter , Agnes Martin , Bruce Nauman and Louise Bourgeois were acquired.

In the past decade, Daros has consistently geared the collection towards meaningful groups of works by the artists who are decisive for it. In addition to the purchase of other important works by representatives of abstract expressionism such as Mark Rothko or Willem de Kooning , the existing position in works by Gerhard Richter was expanded into a significant group. In addition, Daros expanded the spectrum of the collection to include larger groups of works by artists such as Christopher Wool and Thomas Schütte . In addition, the first purchases of works by respected artists such as Philip Guston and Mark Bradford were made.

Daros has also been involved in major museums in recent years. The Stephan Schmidheiny / Daros family supported the new building of the Tate Modern in London in 2000, its extension in 2016 and the extension of the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen.

Connection to the Daros Latinamerica Collection

In the 1990s, Stephan Schmidheiny established an industrial group in Latin America. That is why contemporary Latin American art came into the focus of Daros' activities at the end of the 1990s. So that the collections could develop independently, the Daros Latinamerica Collection was founded in 2000, which is independent of the Daros Collection . Today it is one of the most comprehensive private collections of contemporary Latin American art. It is owned by Ruth Schmidheiny, Stephan Schmidheiny's first wife.

Cooperation with Fondation Beyeler

The Daros Collection has been working closely with the Fondation Beyeler in Riehen in Basel since 2010 . Individual groups of works from the Daros Collection will be integrated into the Fondation Beyeler collection hangings. Daros is also involved in the planned extension of the Fondation Beyeler. A generous donation paved the way for the implementation of the project.
