content

The book largely dispenses with the sociological terminology and is designed as an interview tape. The over forty interviews are each introduced with a short text. There the researchers describe how they found access to the interviewees and their social world. The people interviewed talk about their living conditions, their professional and family perspectives, their experiences and hopes, their expectations and disappointments.

The interviews are based on the methodological concept of understanding . To this end, an attempt was made to create a relationship of active and methodical listening . This

“Combine an attitude of making yourself available to the interviewed person wholeheartedly, of submitting to the uniqueness of their particular story - which through a kind of more or less controlled effect of adaptation can lead to accepting their language and their views, feelings and Making thoughts your own - by means of a methodical construction saturated with knowledge of the objective conditions that are common to an entire social category. "

Impact history

The book was the subject of many reviews within a short period of time. It served as the basis for theater productions on renowned theaters and for television documentaries.

The research approach developed for Das Elend der Welt was also adopted for a corresponding analysis of the German situation. This resulted in a study between 2002 and 2004 in which thirty scientists collaborated. The work was published in 2005 under the title Society with limited liability. Impositions and suffering in everyday German life (edited by Franz Schultheis and Kristina Schulz).

A corresponding study was also carried out in Austria, led by Elisabeth Katschnig-Fasch and devoted to the suburbs of Graz . It was published in 2003 under the title The Quite Everyday Misery. Encounters in the shadow of neoliberalism .

As a music theater project , parts of the stories from the book were brought to the stage by the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus in the 2006/07 season by Laura Berman and Thomas Krupa (concept, version) with actors, singers and musicians, interwoven with cantata music by Johann Sebastian Bach .
