Laura Berman

Laura Berman (* 1959 in Boston ) is an American director and dramaturge . She has been artistic director of the Hanover State Opera since the 2019/2020 season .

life and career

Berman received her first music education at New York's Juilliard School and studied music and opera directing in Princeton , New Jersey and Bloomington , Indiana . Then she received a scholarship in Germany. In Cologne they founded a. a. with Manos Tsangaris and Carola Bauckholt the collective New Fragments Cologne for experimental music theater. She then worked at the Münster Theater and the Darmstadt State Theater as deputy director and dramaturge for dance theater. During this time she produced an annual festival of interdisciplinary art forms together with the choreographer Birgitta Trommler . The program included works by artists such as Alain Platel , Laurie Anderson , Philip Glass and Meredith Monk . Laura Berman worked as a freelance dramaturge for the Wiener Festwochen , the Bavarian State Opera , the Berlin and Schwetzinger Festspiele , the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus and the Zurich Ballet .

From 2001 to 2006 she was the head music dramaturge at the Freiburg Theater . After that she was artistic director of the series "Art from Time" of the Bregenz Festival until 2012 , a program with music theater, performance, dance and concerts, before she founded her own artist and project agency in 2012 with the name Laura Berman_Next and various operas by artists the alternative pop scene. In 2015 she was brought to the Basel Theater as the new opera director by Andreas Beck , with whom she had already worked in Vienna at the Schauspielhaus . In the 2015/16 season, the specialist magazine Opernwelt recognized the opera Thursday made of light as performance of the year.

Laura Berman has been artistic director of the Hannover Opera since the 2019/2020 season . Together with Sonja Anders as acting director, she replaces Lars-Ole Walburg and Michael Klügl as her predecessor at the opera. Even in the run-up to her directorship, Berman made headlines in the city when it was said that she was questioning the opera ball , which has been taking place for more than 25 years . However, this was denied, only the ball in 2020 should be canceled. She was able to hire the choreographer Marco Goecke as director for the ballet division . The 2019/2020 season, which has the motto "Coordinates of the Other", will open with a production of the Grand opéra La Juive under the direction of Lydia Steier . The ballet season begins with the three-part ballet evening Beginning by Adonis Foniadakis, Medhi Walerski and Marco Goecke.
