The Fortune of Julia Tobaldi is a German silent film drama from 1916 with Erna Morena .

action

Julia Tobaldi is the daughter of a wood carver. One day the young painter Bertram Funk falls in love with the pretty young woman and asks her father for her hand. But Julia's producer rejects Funk's application. When Julia is chosen to give the rose virgin at the upcoming Pentecost festival, she cannot take the oath that goes with it, as she has already been robbed of her virginity by Bertram. To make matters worse, the painter was arrested shortly beforehand because he was accused of manslaughter. Julia, pregnant and not married, is seen by the petty bourgeois society as dishonored and ostracized and therefore has to leave her father's house and hometown. The heavily pregnant woman gives birth to her child in a maternity home. She found a good husband in the older, rich factory owner Gottwald, who took her in with her child.

Years have passed and Bertram Funk, who was wrongly imprisoned, is being released again. The real culprit has been found, and Bertram now believes he can pick up where he left off. He visits Julia in the Gottwald house, but realizes that the young woman feels obliged to her current husband and wants to remain loyal to him. Julia rejects Bertram. He then informed her that he would emigrate to America. Now Julia grabs her child while her husband is away and goes to Funk. There she is now unfaithful to her wedded husband. But now her conscience comes in. Julia breaks with Bertram again and returns to the husband. In desperation, she confesses to him that she was cheating in a suicide note, then goes into the garden and shoots herself.
