The blacksmith Alois Brandstädter loves Martha, the daughter of the businessman Breindl. His son Hermann, in turn, fell in love with his father's young accountant. When the First World War broke out, the men had to go to the front, while the women devoted themselves entirely to caring for the young and young at home. Scenes from youth welfare offices, the central children's home in Vienna, boys' day nurseries and day care centers as well as pictures of the infant protection, the Luzina association and the Rudolfinerhaus convey impressions of the charitable work these women do on the “home front”. One day the men return home from the war and embrace their wives.
